Capitalism does not just exploit workers' bodies — it destroys their minds

The Crisis is Material, Not Individual

Across the capitalist world, depression, anxiety, addiction, and suicide are at epidemic levels. The bourgeois explanation is always individual: chemical imbalances, personal weakness, poor lifestyle choices. This is idealism. A materialist analysis reveals that the mental health crisis is a product of the capitalist mode of production itself.

When millions of people in the same economic system develop the same symptoms — chronic stress, hopelessness, isolation, burnout — the cause is not individual pathology. It is the system. Mental illness under capitalism is not a bug; it is a feature of a mode of production that treats human beings as disposable inputs in the valorisation of capital.

Alienation: The Root of Suffering

Marx identified alienation as the fundamental condition of the worker under capitalism. The worker is alienated from their labour, from the product of their labour, from their fellow workers, and from their own human potential. This is not a metaphor — it is a material description of the conditions of wage labour.

When you spend eight, ten, twelve hours a day performing labour over which you have no control, producing commodities you will never own, for the enrichment of a class that despises you — the psychological consequences are inevitable. The worker is reduced to a means of production, an appendage of the machine. Their creative capacities, their social nature, their very humanity is suppressed.

Depression is the psychological expression of alienated labour. Anxiety is the permanent state of precarity. Addiction is the attempt to find in commodities the satisfaction that is denied in production. These are not individual failings — they are the predictable consequences of capitalist relations of production.

Alienation is not merely a feeling — it is a material condition of production under capitalism. The worker is separated from their labour, its products, their fellow workers, and their own creative human nature. Mental distress is the subjective experience of this objective condition.

Precarity: The Permanent State of Fear

The modern working class lives in a state of permanent insecurity. Zero-hours contracts, gig economy exploitation, the constant threat of redundancy, unaffordable housing, mounting debt — every aspect of life under late capitalism is designed to keep workers anxious and compliant.

This precarity is not accidental. It is a deliberate strategy of capital. A frightened worker is a compliant worker. A worker terrified of losing their home does not organise, does not strike, does not demand better conditions. The mental health crisis is functional for capital — it produces a disciplined, desperate, and divided workforce.

In Britain, the gutting of council housing, the destruction of stable employment, the slashing of benefits, and the privatisation of the NHS mental health services have created conditions of mass psychological distress that serve the interests of the ruling class. In France, the assault on labour protections and the extension of working life produce the same effects.

The Pharmaceutical Industry: Profiting from Misery

Capitalism does not merely produce mental illness — it profits from it. The pharmaceutical industry generates billions in revenue from antidepressants, anxiolytics, and other psychotropic medications. The medical model of mental illness — which reduces suffering to individual brain chemistry — is not just scientifically incomplete, it is ideologically convenient.

If depression is a chemical imbalance, then no social change is necessary. If anxiety is a personal disorder, then the capitalist system bears no responsibility. The medicalisation of distress serves to depoliticise suffering, to transform a social problem into a medical one, and to create a captive market for pharmaceutical capital.

This is not to deny the reality of mental illness or the usefulness of medication in many cases. It is to insist that the epidemic scale of mental distress cannot be understood or addressed without confronting its material basis in capitalist exploitation.

Social Media, Atomisation, and Loneliness

The epidemic of loneliness and isolation is another direct product of capitalist social relations. Capital destroys every form of communal life — extended families, trade unions, community organisations, public spaces — and replaces them with atomised individuals connected only through commodity exchange.

Social media, owned and controlled by some of the largest monopoly corporations on the planet, does not connect people — it monetises their loneliness. The platforms are designed to maximise engagement, which means maximising anxiety, outrage, and compulsive use. The attention economy is a machine for producing psychological distress at scale.

The solution is not individual disconnection — it is collective organisation. The antidote to capitalist atomisation is working-class solidarity, communist organisation, and the rebuilding of genuine community through political struggle.

Mental Health Under Socialism

The Soviet Union, for all the slander directed against it, demonstrated that a different approach to mental health was possible. Universal healthcare, guaranteed employment, affordable housing, and a sense of collective purpose produced a society in which the epidemic conditions of capitalist mental distress were substantially reduced.

The restoration of capitalism in the former Soviet Union was followed by an explosion of alcoholism, drug addiction, depression, and suicide — a natural experiment demonstrating the material basis of mental health. Life expectancy in Russia dropped by years in the 1990s. The so-called transition to capitalism was a psychological as well as economic catastrophe.

Cuba today, despite the criminal US blockade, provides universal mental health care integrated into its community-based healthcare system. The Cuban approach treats mental health as a social question, not merely an individual medical one — exactly as materialist analysis demands.

Historical Fact

After the destruction of the Soviet Union, male life expectancy in Russia fell from 64.9 years in 1987 to 57.6 years in 1994. Alcoholism, suicide, and stress-related diseases surged as capitalism replaced socialist security with market chaos.

The Revolutionary Response

The Marxist-Leninist response to the mental health crisis is not therapy — it is revolution. This does not mean that individual support and treatment are unimportant. It means that the systemic causes of mass psychological distress can only be addressed through the overthrow of the capitalist mode of production and the construction of socialism.

As long as the means of production are privately owned, as long as labour is exploited for profit, as long as human beings are treated as commodities — the mental health crisis will continue. Only socialism, by abolishing the material conditions that produce mass suffering, can create the basis for genuine human wellbeing.

Organise Against Despair

One of the most powerful antidotes to the isolation and hopelessness of capitalist life is collective political organisation. Joining a communist party, organising in your workplace, participating in the class struggle — these are not merely political acts. They are acts of psychological liberation.

When workers organise together, they break the atomisation that capitalism imposes. They discover solidarity, purpose, and collective power. The transformation from passive suffering to active struggle is itself a form of healing — not through bourgeois self-help, but through the material practice of changing the world.

The revolutionary movement offers what capitalism never can: a sense of meaning rooted not in commodity consumption but in the collective struggle for human liberation.
