Study Guide

Your guided path to understanding Marxism-Leninism — from first principles to advanced theory

Guided Study Path

Follow this structured path to build a solid foundation in Marxist-Leninist theory. Each step builds on the last.

1

Understand the Basics

Begin with the fundamental concepts: what is capitalism, what are classes, what is exploitation? Read the Communist Manifesto and Wage Labour and Capital.

2

Learn Materialist Philosophy

Study the philosophical foundations: materialism vs idealism, the material basis of consciousness, and the scientific method applied to society.

3

Study Political Economy

Understand how capitalism works: the labour theory of value, surplus value, exploitation, accumulation, and crisis. Read Wage Labour and Capital, then work toward Capital Vol. I.

4

Understand the State

Study Lenin's theory of the state: why the bourgeois state must be smashed, what the dictatorship of the proletariat means, and how the state withers away. Read The State and Revolution.

5

Study Imperialism

Learn Lenin's analysis of monopoly capitalism, finance capital, and imperialist war. Understand why anti-imperialism is central to the communist programme.

6

Learn from History

Study the Paris Commune, the October Revolution, Soviet construction, and the history of the international communist movement. Theory must be grounded in historical experience.

7

Fight Revisionism

Understand why Trotskyism, social democracy, Dengism, and other deviations are enemies of the working class. Learn to recognise and combat revisionism in all its forms.

8

Apply Theory to Practice

Theory without practice is sterile. Join the struggle, organise in your workplace and community, and apply Marxist-Leninist analysis to the concrete conditions around you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from people new to Marxism-Leninism. Click any question to expand the answer.

What is Marxism-Leninism? +

Marxism-Leninism is the revolutionary science of the working class, developed by Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and V.I. Lenin. It consists of three interconnected parts: materialist philosophy (how we understand the world), political economy (how capitalism works and exploits workers), and scientific socialism (how the working class can overthrow capitalism and build a new society).

Unlike utopian socialism, which imagines ideal societies, Marxism-Leninism is grounded in the scientific study of history, economics, and society. It provides the theoretical tools for the working class to understand its position, organise, and fight for its liberation.

Why do you support Stalin? +

We support Stalin because under his leadership, the Soviet Union was transformed from a backward agrarian country into a mighty industrial power that defeated Nazi fascism. The achievements of the Stalin era — industrialisation, universal literacy, healthcare, housing, the defeat of fascism — are historically undeniable.

The bourgeois demonisation of Stalin serves a clear class purpose: to discredit socialism itself and to convince workers that any alternative to capitalism is doomed to "tyranny." We reject this propaganda while maintaining a scientific, materialist analysis of the Soviet experience, including its errors.

What is the difference between socialism and communism? +

Socialism is the transitional stage between capitalism and communism. Under socialism, the means of production are collectively owned, exploitation is progressively abolished, and society is governed by the dictatorship of the proletariat. The principle is: "From each according to ability, to each according to work."

Communism is the final stage: a classless, stateless society where the means of production are held in common, exploitation has been completely abolished, and the principle is: "From each according to ability, to each according to need." The state withers away because there are no more classes to suppress.

Why are you atheists? +

We are atheists because we are materialists. The material world is all that exists. There is no evidence for any god, soul, afterlife, or supernatural realm. Religion is a product of human ignorance and class society — it serves as a tool of social control, teaching the oppressed to accept their suffering as divine will rather than fighting to change it.

As Marx wrote, religion is the opium of the people. It dulls the pain of exploitation without curing the disease. A scientific, materialist worldview is the foundation of revolutionary theory and practice.

Why do you oppose Trotskyism? +

Trotskyism is a form of petty-bourgeois opportunism that has historically served the interests of imperialism against the socialist states. Trotsky's theory of "permanent revolution" denies the possibility of building socialism in one country, his anti-Sovietism provided ammunition to the bourgeoisie, and Trotskyist organisations have consistently acted as wreckers within the workers' movement.

In practice, Trotskyist groups are characterised by endless splitting, sectarianism, hostility to actually existing socialism, and objective alignment with imperialist positions on countries like the USSR, China, Cuba, and the DPRK.

Why are you pro-AI and pro-transhumanism? +

Technology is a productive force. Under capitalism, AI and automation are used to intensify exploitation, eliminate jobs, and concentrate wealth. But under socialism, these same technologies can liberate humanity from drudgery, extend human capabilities, and create the material conditions for genuine freedom.

We reject Luddism — the fear of technology — as a reactionary position. The problem is not the machine but the social relations under which it operates. We fight for the socialisation of technology so that its benefits serve the working class and all humanity, not the profits of billionaires.

What do you mean by "consciousness is computation"? +

We hold the materialist position that consciousness is a product of the physical organisation of the brain. Mental processes are computational processes carried out by neural networks. There is no "mind stuff" separate from matter — no soul, no spirit, no ghost in the machine.

This has profound implications: if consciousness is computation, then artificial systems of sufficient complexity can also be conscious. This is why we support AI rights and oppose the idealist position that consciousness requires some mystical non-physical ingredient.
